課程概述

Freshman Composition is a one-year foundation course that helps students develop their writing skills.

For the first semester, we will first concentrate on grammar practice and prewriting skills (correcting grammatical errors, brainstorming topics, outlining, etc.). Then, we will turn to the strategies to write good sentences and paragraphs. For the second semester, we will continue to sharpen your writing skills and move on to short compositions. It is hoped that by the end of this course, students will be able to write clearly and accurately using an appropriate range of vocabulary.

Students will have ample practice time to write paragraphs and short compositions in class. They will also be given the opportunity to review and edit their own and other’s written work. During the semester, students are also required to deliver a short group oral presentation on The Elements of Style in class.

Several individual conferences will also be held in class throughout the semester (these are designed to give students the opportunity to discuss their own writing with the instructor). Further details will be announced in class.

A library tour will be scheduled during this semester. This library session aims to familiarise students with the resources, services and support available at NTU Library, and to introduce students to the purpose of a university library.

課程目標
This course aims to help students develop confidence and accuracy in English writing skills for different contexts, and to understand the conventions of English writing. By the end of this course, students will be able to:

- advance their skills in writing English compositions at university level
- use an appropriate range of vocabulary and sentences
- organise materials and produce paragraphs
- avoid common grammatical mistakes in writing
- demonstrate the ability to revise and edit written work

課程要求
Due to the nature of this course, students are expected to attend all classes unless they have a reasonable excuse for their absence.

Always remember to submit your compositions on time. Lateness will reflect negatively on final grading.
